Fashion jewellery is made to be worn and enjoyed, not stored away for special occasions that rarely come. Yet many pieces lose their shine far sooner than they should, not because they were poor quality, but because of simple everyday habits: perfume sprayed directly onto a necklace, a bracelet left in a steamy bathroom, or earrings tossed loose into a bag. Good jewellery care is not complicated or expensive; it is mostly about avoiding a handful of common mistakes.

The first rule is simple: jewellery goes on last and comes off first. Apply perfume, lotion, hairspray and makeup before putting jewellery on, and give those products a minute to dry. Chemicals in cosmetics and sprays are the fastest way to dull plating and discolour stones, especially on fashion pieces that are not solid precious metal. Similarly, remove jewellery before showering, swimming or exercising. Water, chlorine, salt and sweat all speed up tarnishing, and a pool or beach is also where small pieces are most easily lost.

Storage matters more than most people expect. Pieces stored together scratch each other, tangle, and rub plating off. Keep each piece in its own pouch or compartment, ideally in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. A jewellery box with separate sections is ideal, but even small zip bags work well for travel. For necklaces, fasten the clasp before storing so chains do not knot, and hang longer necklaces rather than coiling them tightly.

Cleaning should be gentle. For most fashion jewellery, a soft, dry cloth after wearing removes oils and residue and is often all that is needed. If a piece needs more cleaning, use lukewarm water with a tiny amount of mild soap, a soft brush for crevices, and dry it thoroughly before storing. Avoid harsh cleaners, toothpaste and ultrasonic machines on fashion pieces, because they can strip plating and loosen stones. If a piece has glued stones or delicate detailing, stick to a dry cloth only.

Pay attention to wear patterns too. Rings worn daily will show wear faster than earrings worn occasionally, and bracelets rub against desks, sleeves and bags all day. Rotating pieces — not wearing the same bracelet every single day — extends their life noticeably. Likewise, check clasps, hooks and settings regularly. A loose clasp caught early is a quick fix; a loose clasp noticed too late is a lost earring.

Travel needs a little extra planning. Pack jewellery in a dedicated roll or pouch, keep valuable pieces in hand luggage rather than checked bags, and remove pieces before going through security trays where they can be scratched or forgotten. A small microfibre cloth in your travel kit lets you wipe pieces after a long day without needing any special products.

Finally, remember that fashion accessories are meant to be part of your style, not a source of stress. Choose pieces you genuinely enjoy wearing, look after them with these simple habits, and they will reward you by looking good far longer than neglected pieces. When a piece does eventually show wear, that is normal for fashion jewellery — it means it was worn and loved, not kept in a drawer. Care for it well, wear it often, and replace it without guilt when its time has genuinely come.
